Our next calf was born on 15 October a black polled heifer out of Rawlings Delloreen and by Heir Apparent, she will be named Laureen.
We then had a short lull in calvings, but managed to market at Burnie Farmers Market and get some more of our wallaby fencing completed.
On the 18th Jubilee Twist who is sired by BF Clay presented us with a red bull by one of our half American bulls Jackpot. He looks promising so we will see how he grows.
On Sunday 18 October sometime during the day our beautiful Masika, who only has access to an enclosed daytime cat run and at some time unbeknownst to us she must have encountered a snake. I did not find her until the Monday morning in our linen cupboard and obviously fighting the venom she had been affected by. She was rushed to the vet and rapidly treated, but hope was only a 50% chance of survival. A long stay at the vet was on the cards if she survived the night sand it would be a day to day struggle for her to survive.
I decided not to spend the day alone so hooked up with some friends and enjoyed a pleasant lunch then headed for home after checking in with the vet. I was not feeling well and went straight to bed when I got home. Within two hours I asked Mark to take me to the hospital as the pain was increasing and becoming unbearable. We only got 10 kms up the road when I was violently ill and we decided to call an ambulance. A twisted bowel was diagnosed and emergency surgery performed, which revealed a perforation of the bowel also. Thankfully I am on the mend after 12 days in hospital and it was a roller coaster of ups and downs, but hopefully I have turned the corner and an on the improve.
Meantime the cows decided seeing as I was in hospital they would start calving in earnest. I have had many frantic text messages from Mark with pictures wanting to know which cow is this that has calved.
Calvings are as follows for October

Who knows what tomorrow will bring but several more look close. 22 stud calves born and 11 still to calve. I have lots of names to come up with, so stay posted. Photos to follow once I am stronger and able to get out and about.
Masika is also home from the vet, very thin after not eating for several days, lacking energy, but still meowing when she sees us. I haven't had the bill yet, but am thankful she is alive.
So don't ever think life is a bit dull, you can always walk a week or two in my shoes it never seems to rain just pour!!
