We have a run of wet weather coming this week so thought we should do our calf marking (tagging, dehorning and castrating) and according to my sheet we should of had 16 heifers and 7 bulls. We had them all in the race, tagged those who were heifers, castrated one bull calf , and dehorned two heifers. But on checking the box of tags we had one orange tag which denotes a bull calf left and I had written on the correct number of tags. Where was the missing bull calf??? We double checked the paddock, checked the tag numbers to the cows that were obvious, came back to the house, wrote a list of those tags unidentified and sent Mark back out to the paddock to check. Still none the wiser, but this morning when feeding the cows and calves the calf I thought was missing was feeding off his mother, only probelm was he was a heifer. Definitley no testicles there!! I was going to castrate this bull calf anyway as he was too feminine, now I know why. The joys of getting Mark to check the sex of the calf as it is born, note to self make sure they are heifers or bulls, not trust my husband.
Tally so far heifers 17 - bulls 6, 21 of the 23 calves to date being polled and 13 of those potentially homozygous polled.
