Yesterday, 14 October at about lunchtime, our first calf arrived a polled red bull calf out of Rawlings Emerald Skye by Rawlings Heir Apparent.
After feeding everyone in the afternoon it was obvious that one of the heifers Jamiacan Gold was in labour, and several of the others had bagged up significantly more and had discharges. We checked just on dark and Mark decided he would assist the heifer, so came back to the house to get my help.
By the time we got up there she had almost got the head crowned, so it was only a small pull and a black polled heifer calf was born. We then turned around to find another of the cows Fine Wine making mooing noises to a newborn calf, this time a polled red bull. He was the other side of the fence, so Mark hopped over to put him back with his mum. Both of these calves were born within minutes of each other and are both by Kirup Park Jag by Design.
So calving has started in earnest, with two others looking close this morning.
I have already picked out names for today's calves with Emerald's bull being named Lewis, Jamaican Gold's heifer will be known as Lindt Gold and Fine Wine's bull to be called Lindeman.
I am sure I will be blogging again shortly when the next batch of calves arrives. Stay posted there are 33 to be born in this batch, so 30 still to go.
We also had a commercial calf born at the block the day before with one of the red angus/dexter X's giving us a black polled heifer by Grand Design. 3 more to be born over there also.
