We also got to check the poll / horn status of all of the calves, with only one changing to horned and that was Guinness, who is sired by KP Esquire a known heterozygous poll (only carries one polled gene) and out of Rawlings Echo the Beat who is now known to be only heterozygous polled as well. Rawlings Eastern Princess's calf who is only a few days old was also horned by KP Esquire but we knew the chance of polled from that line was low as Eastern Princess is horned. The other calf sired by KP Envoy ,who is a horned bull, over Rawlings Delloreen was Gayleen who we have now dehorned. I did this mating as a bit of a test to see if Delloreen could be homozygous polled (carries two polled genes and so would never produce a horned calf) but this shows she too is heterozygous polled. On a positive note out of our 24 calves only 3 are horned, our best result to date. Also interesting is that all of the calves by Rawlings ET have turned out to be polled, a good indicator that he too may be homozygous polled.
We also drafted Rawlings Delta Blue and Rawlings Emerald Skye and their respective calves into the paddock with the rest of our show team in preparation for Burnie Show which less than two weeks away.
