Kirup Park Stud Joins Us
David and Sue Hannaford established Kirup Park Dexter Stud on 18 April 1994 and were situated in Kirup in the south west of WA. They were committed advocates of the Dexter breed and spent many hours showing their Dexters all over the countryside with great success. They were one of the first studs to commence breeding polled Dexters and had lines which we greatly admired, having purchased quite a few girls for our stud to help us on the way to achieving a polled herd.
An unfortunate illness for David several years ago saw them have to downsize their herd and move into the Perth outer metorpolitan suburb of Champion Lakes on 7 acres. As life goes on after serveral years they came to the realisation that the cattle would have to go, but did not want to disperse the herd. After discussions with Mark and I, we came to an arrangement that the cattle would come to us in Tasmania, we had abundant feed and needed more stock that were MN3 to allow us to utilise our pasture better.
The cattle commenced their journey on a hot day in March 2010 to come across the Nullabor and then onto a boat for the sea leg of the journey with Page Transport. They finally arrived a little worse for the trip than our cattle had been, but glad to be off the truck and onto firm ground.
It has been several months now since their arrival and they have certainly blossomed in terms of their body condition, with all being shiny and fat on lush pasture. The first Tasmanian born calves have arrived, two heifers and three bulls, with the others due early in the new year.
We thank David and Sue for sending us such beautiful animals, most of whom like a bottom scratch in the paddock. They have certainly added a diversified genetic base to the Tasmanian Dexter herd with such elite genetics and kept together the last of the Kirup Park herd. It also gives the Hannaford's a lovely holiday destination to check on their herd in their retirement.
